The 'soupis duši' or 'list of souls' is a house-by-house listing of all residents within a parish. The example below shows the last few houses in the village of Janovec and the first house in the village of Malcin. The first column records the house number; the second column shows the names of each person residing in that house along with their occupations and their relation to the head-of-household; column three is the age of each person; column four indicates whether they were Catholic; and the remaining columns record which sacrements each person had received at the time of the enumeration. These lists were completed each year and it's sometimes possible to find these lists going back to the 1600s. Unfortunately, many of the 'lists of souls' were destroyed or lost over the years. When available, these parish census books can be valuable records to help trace your ancestors' genealogy.
